What could possibly be the motivation for this? To add to David Airey's insights, here's some more aspects of blogging psychology we've noticed:
- Instant gratification: You'll sometimes get an idea and think "I must blog that immediately!" and you go do that. You can hop out of the shower with your hair still wet, or even get out of bed to do it when the idea kept you tossing and turning.
- The social urge: Just like having a chat in person is sometimes a fun thing to do, sometimes you blog just to give a shout out to your friends in the same circle, or to show your support of another's idea.
- Performance anxiety: Sometimes when you haven't blogged for a while, you get kind of blocked. After three day's silence, you don't want to follow up with some wimpy cat picture. So you want a big idea, which will take another day to think up. And then you've waited four days...
- Therapy by ranting: You wonder how many violent crimes out there could have been averted if the perpetrator had just had an account set up with Blogger.com. Truly, it's the best way to get something that's bothering you out of your system.
- Nesting: Here's your spot, so how do you make it unique? Over time, you accumulate a blogroll. Then you see some nifty widget out there and you have to snag it to use on your site. Over time, you fill the page with trinkets, gadgets, and widgets. It's just like how you furnish a home; a bit at a time, until you have the space filled. Then it's yours.
